I am an Associate Professor of Stochastics in the Department of Mathematics at Clausthal University of Technology, substituting the Chair for Stochastic Models in the Engineering Sciences. I studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Bonn where I received my diploma in Computer Science and my Dr. rer. nat. degree in 1998 and 2004, respectively. From 1998 to 2003, I was a Scientific Member in the Institute of Computer Science IV at the University of Bonn, Group for Operating Systems and Stochastic Modeling. Since 2004, I have been an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Science at the University of Bamberg, Group for Communication Services, Telecommunication Systems and Computer Networks, where I am now since April 2009 on a temporary leave for my current position. In May 2005, I was also as a Visiting Professor in the Information Engineering Department at the University of Pisa (Italy), and in March 2007 and March 2009 as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Telematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of applied and computational stochastics, in particular stochastic modeling and analysis of complex systems with applications to performance evaluation of computer and communications networks, operations research, and systems biology:
  • Stochastic Processes and Queueing Theory
  • Heavy-Tailed Distributions, Self Similarity, Long Range Dependence
  • Numerical Analysis of Markovian Models with Large State Space
  • Modeling and Analysis of Biological and Gene Regulatory Networks
  • Robust Statistical Estimators and Stochastic Simulations
  • Rare Event Simulation, Variance Reduction, Importance Sampling
  • Adaptive Optimization of Estimators, Ant Colony Optimization
